The most honorable performance last night at the 2012 BET Awards was done by Cissy Houston in honor of her late daughter, Whitney Houston.
Cissy performed a captivating version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and topped it off by saying, "This is for you, Nip."
This past February, Houston drowned in a Beverly Hills Hotel bathtub. The legendary singer died the night before the Grammy Awards at age 48.
The tribute was introduced by Mariah Carey who emotionally shared, "I miss my friend. I miss hearing her voice and laughter, but we'll always have the music," Carey said. "We'll always have that voice we all fell in love with. She inspired us all."
The heartfelt tribute brought top artists like Beyoncé to tears.
Houston's brother Gary added to the tribute by performing "Where You Are," while Monica sang "I Love the Lord." Brandy livened things up with her performance of "I'm Your Baby Tonight." Closing the show was the soulful Chaka Khan singing "I'm Every Woman," Houston's 1993 hit song.
Houston's "Waiting to Exhale" cast mates- Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon also shared personal memories of the late singer.
Both Monica and Brandy later tweeted warm messages about the opportunity to perform in memory of Houston. Brandy tweeted, "One of the best nights of my ENTIRE LIFE!!! Whitney Houston, I LIVE, and LOVE YOU 4ever!!!" While Monica tweeted "I'm still overwhelmed," and said that she was "honored."
