When you think of "Top Gun," what immediately comes to your mind is Tom Cruise dressed in the immaculate white uniform as Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell of the United State Navy. Of course, who would forget the zooming F-14s and MiGs used in the film? It's an adrenaline pumping action movie that was 1986s' highest grossing movie!
Recently, talks have been circulating that a sequel, "Top Gun 2," is in the works with Tom Cruise reprising his role as a fighter pilot.
According to Venture Capital Post, "Top Gun 2" will see fighter pilots going up against drones. Skydance CEO David Ellison said that the writer, Justin Marks, has started with the script. He said, "Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today."
He also added that "Top Gun 2" will not focus so much on dog fights but will instead move on with the times.
"It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters...It's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today," said Ellison.
Aside from Tom Cruise reprising his role, speculation is going around that there will be an addition to the cast of royal highness caliber, someone residing at the Buckingham Palace.
In a report by Glamour Magazine from a supposed American casting agent statement, it mentioned that, "Tom has thrown the offer out to his team to hit up Buckingham Palace and get Prince Harry. He's even suggested the prince's salary could be donated directly to his chosen charity. Tom also hopes David Beckham can put a word in and pull some strings, too."
Furthermore, according to the said agent, "He doesn't just want Harry as a gimmick casting but someone who offers a real experience and knowledge of flying in combat. Harry has been on the frontline in Afghanistan, so he has the credentials to stand tall in the film."
It seemed like a far fetched idea that royal blood would act in a Hollywood film such as "Top Gun 2," but hey, it's Tom Cruise asking. Besides, no date has been set yet for its release, so a lot of things can happen in the days and months head.
Meanwhile, according to Extra, Tom Cruise answered, "If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it'd be fun to do, I'd like to fly those jets again, but we got to do all the jets practical, no CGI on the jets... I'm saying right now no CGI on the jets. If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun," when asked by AJ Calloway of Extra if he would come back and do "Top Gun 2."
The star of "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" also talked about his movie where he revealed that, "McQuarrie and I just finished this on Saturday... at 2 o'clock... we're all just really going to enjoy this evening. We're gonna be seeing all the final pieces that we did from Friday night to Saturday," in reference to his current movie being screened in Imax at The Vienna Opera House, as per Daily Mail.
