"Snowtown" director Justin Kurzel is set to helm the movie adaptation of the popular video game "Assassin's Creed." The film is reportedly to start production in September.
Kurzel was reportedly asked why he thinks this video game could turn out to be a good movie, and he said there was so much underneath it.
"I don't think it's your typical shoot-em-up game. I don't think it's your typical one-dimensional game. It has a heart and a history to it," he explained during an interview with IGN.
The game has about 90 million players according to Kurzel, so he thinks that there is something more to "Assassin's Creed" than just the fun of playing it. He pointed out that there is a culture to the game that people responded to.
Kurzel will be joined by "X-Men: Days of Future Past" actor Michael Fassbender and "The Dark Knight Rises" actress Marion Cotillard. According to the International Movie Database, "Assassin's Creed" is their second collaboration after "Macbeth."
When the movie was announced three years back, Fassbender was reported to play the lead role. However, uncertainties rose when Ubisoft, developer of the game, and Sony ended the talk about the film adaptation.
Now, Ubisoft will independently produce the film, and, apparently, he was their first choice for the lead role. The thing is, it's not yet confirmed if he's going to play the protagonist Desmond Miles, a lead antagonist or a totally different role.
Other than Fassbender and Cotillard, "Assassin's Creed's" Facebook page announced in the recent months that Michael K. Williams of "12 Years a Slave" and "Alps" actress Ariane Labed will join the cast. Their roles are not confirmed as well.
"Assassin's Creed" movie is set to be released on Dec. 21, 2016.
