Tom Cruise and wife Katie Holmes settled their divorce suit on Monday in a case that created questions on how the two would decide on raising their daughter.
"The case has been settled and the agreement has been signed. We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life, Holmes attorney Jonathan Wolfe said in a statement to Reuters.
Holmes previously filed for divorce from Cruise on June 28. The filing occurred while Cruise was in Iceland filming and reports say that it came as a shock to him.
It is believed that Holmes has moved 6-year-old daughter Suri from their home in Beverly Hills to New York City to prevent her from being raised with a religious background rooted in the Church of Scientology, Cruises' religious belief. This speculation has however not been confirmed, as representatives and lawyers of both Holmes and Cruise refuse to give insight on Holmes' motive.
Both stars have not made any public commentary on the matter, aside from a statement on Monday that said the two would resolve the issue privately.
"We are committed to working together as parents to accomplishing what is in our daughter Suri's best interest," they commented in a joint statement. "We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents."
The quick resolution to the divorce suit occurred as a means for both actors to move on with their lives and keep their differences and the future of their family out of the public eye. According to Reuters, the statement from Holmes' attorney suggested that the couple had taken all of last week to come to the settlement.
