The "Predator" franchise, contrary to rumors that it was put to a halt, is in the works. Shane Black, "Iron Man 3" director, was hired to helm and co-write the screenplay of the new film with Fred Dekker.
In an interview with Collider, film producer John Davis confirmed that the "Predator" project is ongoing. Davis said he read the script and thought it was beautifully and geniusly written.
"Shane's got a writing partner, Fred Dekker," Davis said, confirming the writing duo. "They've been doing it together and Fred's great.
Davis additionally said the viewers will get something they never expected. He described Black and Dekker's writing work as the "most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise."
Black recently wrapped up "The Nice Guys," starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, to hit the theaters next year. He is also set to direct "Doc Savage," allegedly to star Chris Hemsworth.
Despite the hectic schedule, the screenwriter is immersed in penning the story. Black's approach, with the "Monster Squad" director, is to make the new movie an "inventive sequel," not a reboot, Gamespot reported.
"Why start over, when you've all this rich mythology yet to mine?" he asked.
The original film was helmed by John McTiernan in 1987, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, according to Shock Till You Drop. It was immediately followed by the sequel "Predator 2" in 1990.
Crossing over with Fox's "Alien" franchise, the movie had two additional sequels — "Alien vs. Predator and AvP: Requiem." "Predators" produced by Robert Rodriguez happened in 2010, under the tutelage of Nimrod Antal.
There are speculations that Emma Stone and Tyrone Magnus will star in the new movie. Their names can be found under the movie's cast, on IMDb, but with a parenthesis stating rumored.
At this point, there are no official statements yet about the casting.
Meanwhile, Predator was reportedly added to as DLC to Mortal Kombat X. The character is part of the Kombat Pack with Jason Voorhees, Tanya and Tremor.
Stay tuned for more updates on "Predator."
