Good news Amazon Prime subscribers! Amazon is adding six months of free access to the Washington Post to paid members who are subscribed to the $99 annual Prime membership program of the company.
Now aside from just getting free books, music and video, Amazon Prime members can also avail of free news content from the Washington Post for six months, Forbes has learned.
The announcement of Washington Post's arrival to the Prime subscription program of Amazon does not come as a surprise since Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos bought the daily newspaper two years ago.
Bezos, who has admitted to not having adequate know-how on the newspaper business, purchased the newspaper in 2013 just to offer Kindle Fire users a free Washington Post app.
However, Bezos may have found another way to utilize the Washington Post to the fullest by offering a 6-month subscription to Prime users free of charge. That saves Prime members $9.99 per month of subscription to the newspaper app, as per TechCrunch.
Once the 6-month subscription is over, Kindle Fire tablet users will be provided with the option of continuing the service at a reduced price of $3.99 per month.
"Offering free access to new subscribers through Prime allows us to connect with millions of members nationwide who may not have tried The Post in the past," Washington President Steve Hills was quoted as saying by the New York Times.
"With this special offer, Prime members can see firsthand why more than 50 million people monthly choose The Washington Post as their source for news," Hills added in a statement.
With the new subscription freebie, the Seattle-based company might be seeing a boost in the number of its Prime members worldwide. If not for the Washington Post access, Amazon consumers may be lured to up their Prime subscription because of the company's expanding services and perks for its Prime program.
