Leonardio DiCaprio joined a movement that divests investment from fossil fuels and invests in climate solutions, thus, promoting a cleaner environment. He made an appearance at the press conference of Divest Invest in New York, Tuesday.
The "Wolf of Wall Street" actor made a pledge to divest his and the assets managed by the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation from fossil fuel investment, Mashable reported.
"After looking into the growing movement to divest from fossil fuels and invest in climate solutions, I was convinced to make the pledge on behalf of myself and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation," DiCaprio, who was named as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, said.
The 40-year-old environment activist added that it was time to let the world leaders know that the individuals and institutions were taking some actions to address climate changes.
"We expect them to do their part this December in Paris at the U.N. climate talks," he continued.
The movement reaches out to individuals, family and institutional investors, and in just a matter of three years, the fossil-free campaign has grown so much. Philly.com reported that it already reached a $2.6 trillion worth of investment.
DiCaprio will be joining forces with over 2,000 individuals and 400 organizations, according to People. They will use their investment decisions as a method in fighting against the growing global warming crisis.
The strategies for divestment differs as per the report of BusinessGreen. Some investors are pulling out funding from all fossil fuel companies, while others are only divesting from the highest carbon assets, like coal.
The Rockefeller Foundation, Guardian Media Group, California Pension Funds and the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund are just some of the prominent institutions that support this movement.
Mary Boeve, climate advocacy organization 350.org executive director, said that the movement is growing faster than expected.
DiCaprio joins fellow Hollywood actor and environmentalist Mark Ruffalo in this movement.
