“The Good Wife” has since moved on from Archie Panjabi’s Kalinda Sharma’s departure and from the death of Josh Charles’ Will Gardner, so as it enters Season 7, fans are anticipating on what’s to come to Julianna Margulies’ Alicia Florrick as she continues to stand on shaky ground.
Fans will not have to wait any longer to watch "Good Wife" Season 7's first episode because, fortunately, the legal drama is premiering this Sunday night. But will the show continue to live up to the high bar it set on national TV now that it is on its seventh run? The answer is very likely.
After having the titular character go through a lot in the previous season and the season before that, can Alicia find redemption for a love she lost and a friend who formally left? Looks like the answer to this question will be the major driving force of season 7. Juliana Margulies' character is now more eager to practice law, and she is set to find herself working at a bond court, as per Variety. There she'll meet lawyer Lucca Quinn, played by Cush Jumbo, who will teach her the ropes of the system.
Jumbo is the new series regular who may be the person to fill in the large gap Panjabi's exit from the series has created. In "Good Wife" Season 6, fans were saddened by Panjabi's exit, not only because her character's departure was not quite a graceful one and somehow bordered on being flat and lacking. At the same time, the finale scene that brought Alicia and Kalinda together may have disappointed a lot of fans after reports surfaced that the reunion scene was not really that genuine since the two rumored to be fighting stars of the show had to be CGI-ed.
For Panjabi's part, she has on more than one occasion insisted that the rumored rift was not true. She has even been ver grateful to everyone on the show and to the fans who made the show run longer possible. Just last month she took to Twitter to once again thank "The Good Wife" supporters. She tweeted: "Thanks to all the fans for 6 years of amazing support."
Since Alicia is bound to work with Jumbo's character, its obvious that the makers of the show are trying to give the vulnerable lead another character she could count on. The new series regular opened up recently about the possible friendly relationship between her character and Margulies' Alicia.
The newcomer said, "Lucca admires Alicia but she's also a challenge to her and you're kind of wondering which way is that going to go with them? Is that going to make them clash? Is that going to make them work really well together? But Lucca also has a real warmth about her, and a kind of openness."
Speaking of the Alicia-Kalinda and Alicia-Lucca friendship comparisons, Jumbo told The Hollywood Reporter: "Obviously as someone who is a big fan of the show, I was a big fan of the relationship as well and I thought it was great, as a lot of people did. But the minute I started reading about Lucca, it was really clear to me that they were two different entities."
The she went on to say, "I knew that people would possibly draw comparisons just because we're both female leads, we're both British actresses, we're both people of color, but it was very clear straight away that there was nothing there that was even similar."
Aside from Lucca's storyline in the series, fans should also anticipate what issues Alicia is going to face this time. First, there's her second child already grown up to go to college. "A lot of it is [about] how do you then remake this kind of family-like relationship that is a combination of work and home?" Robert King teased.
