D'Angelo Russell is drawing comparison with Laker legend Magic Johnson, after notching 11 assists on the Lakers' recent preseason game. In addition, even the team's best player, Kobe Bryant, has called the rookie guard as one of the best playmakers in the game.
According to Silver Screen and Roll, after suffering a minor injury, Russell returned to the game in a match against the Maccabi Haifa of Israel. And based on what the people saw, the young point guard is clearly fine as he gives clean passes to his team mates.
"If you're open, I'm going to get it to you. Half the time, you won't know you're open," Russell told media following his double-digit dime outing.
He also said, "When I get the ball, I like to pass, so if a guy knows me, he's going to be running, running, running just to get an easy bucket or get to the foul line to get himself going."
As reported by Fox Sports, his team mate Julius Randle also offered some praises and said, "That's what he does, he gets everybody involved and make the game easier for everybody."
The rookie's double digit assist may also be attributed to a wide array of offensive weapons surrounding him such as Kobe, Nick Young, Jordan Clarkson and even Lou Williams.
And as noted by ESPN, Russell's sharp passes made his head coach Byron Scott, to compare him to Magic Johnson, who hard core Lakers fans may recall, as the one who anchored the team's "Showtime" basketball.
It's also interesting to add that Russell did all of those 11 assist in just 8 minutes, a clear indication of skill and efficiency.
This coming weekend, Russell will get to test his mettle as the Lakers will face the defending champions, Golden State Warriors.
Everyone is anticipating the match but more importantly, the duel between the reigning MVP Stephen Curry vs. D'Angelo Russell.
However, the Lakers' young player downplayed the matchup and just said, "I look at it more as Lakers versus Kings [or] Lakers versus Warriors instead of me versus that guy."
