A-list star Denzel Washington is coming to TV in a role we did not expect. The multi-awarded actor is going to debut his TV directing skills in the long-running medical drama series "Grey's Anatomy."
TV Line revealed yesterday that indeed, Washington will direct the ninth episode of "Grey's Anatomy" season 12.
Though Washington is definitely not a novice at directing, having helmed "Antwone Fisher" in 2002 and "The Great Debaters" in 2007, directing for television for the first time presents a relatively new challenge.
Fans warmed up to the idea and even suggested Washington's cameo appearance in the drama series.
The actor-slash-director-slash-producer is set to occupy the show's director's chair later this month, E Online reported. The episode was written by head writer Stacy McKee and is currently scheduled to air next month, during November Sweeps.
Grey's Anatomy has done well in ratings over the years and with a high-profile name like Denzel Washington, there's certainly a lot of expectation.
This stint will also be a reunion with old-time friend Debbie Allen, the show's full-time executive producer/director. We assume that this friendship has something to do with getting Washington on board as Allen told Variety, "I'm selecting the directors this season. Over our 24 episodes, 10 of them are directed by women, and I'm still looking."
We also discovered that this is not Washington's only small screen venture. According to USA Today, this is just the start as he is also slated to produce 10 of Pulitzer-awarded playwright August Wilson's works on HBO.
"I'm directing and producing and acting in one (Fences) and I'm executive producing the other nine," Washington announced at a Q&A event.
In the meantime, Washington continues to be busy in acting roles. He has just wrapped up the filming of the movie "The Magnificent Seven" and is ready to come back to the sequel of "The Equalizer," which is set for release in 2017.
