The Catacombs of Paris have been famously known as the world's largest grave, underground ossuaries holding about six million dead people. It is currently making headlines after popular lodging service Airbnb offered an overnight stay at the dark and creepy graveyard located beneath the busy streets of the City of Lights.
Do you want to have a creepy Halloween overnight stay? Well, this is your chance! According to New York Daily News, Airbnb launched a contest where thrill-seekers can win the unusual accommodation for two inside the Catacombs of Paris. The creepy and hair-raising prize includes a bed, a tour of the underground grave, dinner accompanied by a violinist and a breakfast in the morning.
The prize, however, can be yours, if winners can make it through the night. The Catacombs of Paris accommodation could also be won after potential participants submit a write-up with 100 words in either English or French language about why they think they're suited to handle a night in the catacombs known as the "Empire of Death," The Globe and Mail noted. The short pitch must be submitted to Airbnb's website.
"Looking for a change from the usual Halloween festivities? Escape the pint-sized pirates and mini goblins in the world's largest grave," the travel website said, as per Huffington Post.
"On Halloween night, journey to the center of the earth and learn about the hair-raising history of this mysterious subterranean labyrinth," it added. "Satisfy your thirst for adventure in the sprawling network of skulls and bones. Next, savor a dazzling culinary experience while enjoying a private concert in the most incredible acoustics under the earth. Before bedtime, a storyteller will have you spellbound with fascinating tales from the Catacombs, guaranteed to produce nightmares. Finally, enjoy dawn with the dead, as you become the only living person ever to wake up in the Paris Catacombs."
Meanwhile, the Catacombs of Paris have been considered as one of the 14 City of Paris Museums that have been incorporated in France since Jan. 1, 2013. It is a dark and creepy yet fascinating historical wonder known as the country's "Empire of the Dead," luring every tourist visiting the French City.
Even though the Catacombs of Paris are open for tours and visitors, much of them are out of bounds to the public, as previously reported. Thus, making it illegal to be explored unsupervised. However, it still has a powerful effect that lured several hardcore explorers (cataphiles) to quench their thirst for a spooky adventure.
Despite being a place of fear with ghostly legends, the Paris Catacombs still draw thousands of visitors, who wanted to explore the tunnel, each year. It has been reported that the Catacombs still exert a strong influence on popular culture and have given rise to many urban legends including tales of Masonic meetings, black masses, Nazi gatherings, gang fights and serial killers. It also became a hotspot for porn shoots.
In other news, it took Paris more than a decade to move all the bones into the Catacombs of Paris, a March 2014 Smithsonian.com article revealed. As reported, some of the oldest bones date back in Merovingian Era, which was over 1,200 years ago.
