Romney « getting tough on Big Bird”?

Where are the Big Bird fans out there? After around half an hour on the verbal playing field between the two candidates, Obama rebuffed Mitt Romney saying that he'd stop funding for PBS.

"I'm sorry, Jim. I'm gonna stop the subsidy to PBS," Romney turned to the moderator and former PBS NewsHour anchor Jim Lehrer, going on to say "I like PBS; I like Big Bird; I actually like you, too." He continued by saying that would not "borrow from China" in order to continue funding public broadcasting.

However, some individuals like PBS chief Paula Kerger are demoralized by his comment. Romney's claims for upholding education seem unconvincing when he talks of his plans to cut subsidizations for public broadcasting. PBS and National Public Radio has offered educational programming to the public and is embedded in the socio-cultural psyche of America and a long-standing childhood memory for many people.

An anonymous individual then created a @FiredBigBird account on Twitter. The comment ignited some 350 000 tweets. The account has been suspended; however, the past tweets can be viewed here: https://www2.macleans.ca/2012/10/03/romney-vs-big-bird-twitter-responds-vol-2-by-firedbigbird/

Comically, one of the comments was: "Mitt Romney favors Wall Street over Sesame Street"!
