WWE Fans will get to see a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion after its current holder, Seth Rollins, suffered a debilitating knee injury during a live event in Ireland.
As reported by News, WWE announced that a tournament will be held to decide who will be the company's new heavyweight champion through the "Survivor Series" later this month.
During the WWE Live Event in Ireland, Rollins was competing in match when he landed awkwardly, therefore tearing his right ACL, MCL and medial meniscus.
But what he does next shocked fans because instead of stopping the match and having his knees checked, he soldiered on and delivered a nasty power bomb move to a 150-kilogram Kane. Nowadays, the line between reality and kayfabe is getting blurry which is why some fans even wonder if the injury was real or not.
Fortunately, Rollins completed the move and the match but had to be helped backstage afterwards. Reports said that he will likely miss six to nine months of action due to the injury and has since vacated the WWE Heavyweight title.
In a similar report by the Baltimore Sun, this is the second time in 18 months that the WWE title will be vacated because of an injury.
Early reports regarding Rollin's injury seemed positive and said that he just tweaked it and could continue doing the European tour. However, the worst fears ended up coming true because after numerous tests, WWE announced that almost every knee ligament was torn off.
With the title vacated, World Wrestling Entertainment quickly made an announcement regarding the championship tournament on its upcoming pay-per-view.
This is not the first time that a tournament for a vacated WWE title was held at "Surivor Series." Back in 1998, the title was vacated, although in a storyline, and they held the "Deadly Game" tournament to determine the champion. Then WWE star The Rock teamed up with Vince McMahon to become the Corporate Champion at the end of the night.
The Daily Mirror reported that Seth Rollins is arguably the finest performer in WWE today, so his injury will be a big blow to the company.
He enjoyed a quick and phenomenal rise since graduating from WWE's developmental division NXT and as part of the stable "The Shield."
He won the WWE Heavyweight Championship when he decided to cash his "Money in The Bank" briefcase to take on Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns during "Wrestlemania 31."
And although fans are a little disappointed that the match between him and Roman Reigns would not happen, they are more than understanding and wish the injured wrestling star a fast recovery.
