Coffee: Is It The New Elixir To Longevity? Researchers Believe So

There's good news to coffee lovers! If you frequent Starbucks Tim Horton's, know very well that with your every trip, you're probably extending your life by a day or more!

This is because the latest research for coffee revealed that it is really good for the health. In particular, scientists said that it can be the modern elixir to prolong the human life.

The conclusion of the new study was published on Circulation Journal. It states that individuals who take one to five cups of coffee a day have higher immortality rate compared to those who don't.

To complete their studies, researchers requested more than 200,000 people, men and women, to report their daily habits every four years. The participants did what was asked for the period of 30 years.

Based on the results, people who usually have a cup of coffee have the least risk of dying from serious illnesses including diabetes, heart disease and suicide. And the risk further goes down if the coffee drinker were a non-smoker.

Moreover, decaffeinated coffees were said to be good as well. Scientists say that as long as the drinker keep his intake to under five cups a day, consumption of decaf is a good addition to a healthy lifestyle.

Then again, researches cautioned that, although these were the results of their tests, it doesn't mean that the secret to longevity is coffee. They explained that their findings just showed there is a link but they cannot confirm if coffee is directly accountable for bringing down risk of death from the mentioned major diseases.

But despite this, there's one thing that they are sure of, coffee contains a number of substances that are known to be effective in shrinking insulin resistance or inflammation. With lower insulin resistance, the person's health would be better.

Likewise, on Chicago Tribune, Dr. Frank Hu, the team leader of the research and professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, said that people have a misconception with drinking coffee; for years it was believed that drinking it is a bad habit.

But Dr. Hu pointed out that numerous studies have shown there is a link between moderate coffee intake and lower chances of developing major diseases including liver cancer. It was added that even Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and sclerosis can be prevented with coffee, lowering overall risk of death. Coffee is indeed healthful to an extent.
