Look up! The sky is falling!
Each year around this time, the Leonid meteor shower illuminates the sky for a short moment.
They arrive this weekend just before dawn on Saturday. You should be able to view it on clear skies. They look like shooting stars.
The Leonids is one of astronomy’s great shows and there are actually around a dozen meteors per hour. They can recur night after night.
Happen to miss it? You can catch the Geminids arriving around December 13th. You should be able to see around 100 shooting stars each hour. It should be quite a dazzling spectacle to behold! You could bring a few family and friends, bundle up outside with warm cocoa and enjoy the show.
When you arrive for the shimmering scene, make sure to be awake and alert as many meteors fly by in a second or less. Some come streaking the skies in groups. It is easier to view them in the darkest of the night. Yes, there are meteors in the daytime, however, it is less difficult to view because of the Sun.
So try to catch up on some sleep and wait to stay up for a good night’s starry show!
