Picking a career is truly one of the biggest, most important decisions we have to make in our lifetime. Not only is it a big part of our identity, but the jobs we choose are also what is mostly going to make and shape up our future, depending on how well we take care of them. In making a decision, here are 5 questions to ask yourself before you finally settle with a long-term career:
1. What skills do I have to offer? List them down, go ahead. Don't cut yourself short of what you can do. Get a piece of paper and a pen and fire away. Jot everything you think you excel at or know that you can grow from down and put them into order. Which of them do you want to prioritize upon job application?
2. What are my personality traits? You should never leave this one out. Always consider personal matters like this when deciding on a career. This will help you out when it comes to picking your work environment. Are you more of the competitive type or the cooperative? Do you prefer leading a team or doing solo works? Taking your sake into consideration is not bad at all. This is your career, after all.
3. What are my salary needs? Though salary does not necessarily have to be the main priority when choosing a career for the first time, it is, without a doubt, one major thing to consider. What if the job you desire does not give that good of a pay as compared to your other options? Always remember that higher-paying jobs usually require more qualifications.
4. What are my interests? Usually, those who enjoy their jobs are the ones who excel on their field and get more work done. Because let's face it, if you're having fun, everything seems to be a breeze. Never forget to ask yourself what sparks your curiosity up and brings out the creativity in you. What kind of books do you read? Do you like to do Math all day? The questions to ask yourself are endless.
5. What are my values? A tad bit more relevant than your interests, the things you value are usually the predictor of the satisfaction level you achieve in your career. If it's the money that you value, look for a job that pays well. If you value your passion, then look for a job where you can showcase that. Think about what you value the most when it comes to work.
Apart from asking these questions to yourself, never forget to involve the important people in your life. Ask for advice and don't be afraid to ask more questions because the ones on this list does not determine your decision - and it's great to hear suggestions from people who will be a part of your success.
