Recently, Spotify is reportedly launching video content on its android app platform with the iOS following suit. True to its word, Spotify has just launched its video channel.
Spotify video has released content from ESPN, MTV, Comedy Central, BBC, MTV and more. All video shows are available for viewing on both iOS and Android platforms.
The company initially reported that it was launching its video side on May of last year but delays in testing has pushed it further and further away. The testing of the beta version has been done in the United States, UK, Germany and Sweden. The video service eventually reached the end of the testing journey, as Shiva Rajaraman, Spotify's VP of product, puts it.
Video content will be sorted into different categories with content available from ESPN, MTV and other popular networks.
Categories like "Laughs for Lunch" and "News of the Week" are uploaded. The video service however mostly consists of short clips and not a full "show" length. Clips that are said to be available include Jimmy Kimmel Live and some popular web series.
However, Spotify is known to be a music streaming platform and its current struggle is to get users to be more engaged in the video side of Spotify. Spotify's current user base is more than 75 million and it hopes that they will get used to watching videos on the app.
What users need to know that the launch will not have advertizing. As Rajaraman explains it, the company is doing well without monetization. They want to be able to give music fans what they ask which means the video service is not profitable even though they are paying their partners to license their content.
If you have the app open, look under the "Browse" section. Spotify users can choose "Shows" which will feature both audio and video shows, as reported online.
