Do you feel stuck at your job right now? Or you might be thinking of changing your career? Maybe thinking it's time to chase that dream you've always had before? It's okay. It's perfectly normal to think that. Before handing in your papers though, there are a few things to remember.
What's new in the 21st Century is that you get to decide what you want to happen, what you want to do.
And if you don't like it, then you can change. But change doesn't come easy for some people and it can be a scary thing. Maybe right now you're feeling the rush of freedom but in a split second you're reaching for your safety blanket. It's normal. Monique Valcour recommends a few things that can help reach your dreams:
- Follow your energy and interest - This is the most important step in your strategy because energy and interest will direct you to your path. What are the things that excite you and stimulate your mind? What makes you excited that you couldn't sleep?
- Learn about the work by researching and networking - Once you figure out step 1, you need to research about it. Find out what makes it tick. It will make you ask questions if you are indeed ready or skilled for that kind of job. Find people who are or have done the same thing. Ask them questions and maybe build a network.
- Try out the work by taking on projects or consulting - Okay, so you think you already know the ins and outs, it's time to try it out. Take on a small project and test out what you've learned. You are bound to make mistakes at this point but that's the beauty of it. Don't get defeated just yet. If needed, do more research and learn.
- Find or create a job that lets you do exciting work - If you're ready to take the leap, then do it. Sometimes, you're the only unique thing out there and that can be a good thing.
- Keep learning - Lastly, don't stop learning. You'll get better everyday. The moment you've stopped learning is the moment you've stopped being passionate.
Valcour's recommendations are guidelines which you can use to strategically and carefully follow to change careers, chase your dreams, or even just do something different with your life. All you have to remember that there is no perfect formula and its a process you, as an individual, can only do by experiencing these yourself. Only then, you'll end up with a job that you're passionate of, invested in and valued.
