Friends Day: Facebook Invents Its Own Holiday

Facebook has launched 'Friends Day' in celebration of its 12th year and is kicking up memories including the unwanted and potentially gut-wretching ones, as reported by The Daily Mail on Friday.

The 'Friends Day' video aims to stitch together memories in a certain algorithm which would result to a minutes-long flick of slideshows. Years-old photographs and 'selfies' are being generated and compiled to remind you of some things that you've probably long forgotten or worse still on the process of trying to forget. In an attempt to spread a friendship-filled news feed for the Facebook users, this feature tend to pull photographs of people who have passed away, friends with bad blood, and ex-partners that have been buried in the back of people's minds.

Twitter users were quick to voice their dissatisfaction out. "Thank you Facebook for putting all my exes in my 'Friendship 'Day' video. Maybe on 'Pet Day' you can put pics of my dead childhood parakeet!" a an account called Why You're Single posted. User Emma Gannon said that she was not able to recognize anyone on her montage. While Imaan Sheikh sent shout outs to everyone whose Facebook's Friends Day video 'sent them into an inescapable bout of loneliness and depression'.

According to news.com.au, this one can be compared to an 'annoying friend from high school that can't stop talking about the past'. And even though they acknowledge Facebook's effort in trying to spread love, news.com.au thinks that the website should just go back to doing their thing before this.

The website has been known for its attempt to remind people about certain memories in their lives. Another one they have is the "On This Day" feature, which shows a collection of what you have posted that they, wherein you can pick one to share with your friends.
