Not A Fan Of Windows 10? Switch To Windows 3.1 Instead

For those who are averse in using Windows 10, Microsoft offers an alternative - Windows 3.1. Windows have seen so many upgrades through the years but not everyone can recall that it all started with Windows 3.1.

Now, Microsoft appears to have unearthed its original operating system from the Internet Archive and is offering the 24-year old Windows 3.1 OS to those who would like to have that feeling of nostalgia.

Windows 3.1 is the software giant's first attempt at developing an OS using a graphical user interface. Now, Microsoft gave a recent teaser of its first operating system.

Those who might have started using the very first PCs way back will welcome the news that it is now possible to install this OS in the latest Windows PC. An emulated Windows 3.1 environment in the browser comes with a horde of new games, utilities and several 1990s apps.

More than 1,500 applications have been brought to life with the re-introduction of Windows 3.1. The collection comes with huge numbers of games that will really trigger nostalgia for the older ones.

The idea pushed by the Internet Archive is to give access to the past digital technology that could get lost easily.

"Libraries exist to preserve society's cultural artifacts and to provide access to them," said the Internet Archive. This website also wants to be a Web-only version of these digital technologies and apps.

Some of the most popular games available for use at the Internet Archive are:

  • Solitaire XXX - the usual game of solitaire
  • Wheel of Fortune - win prizes by spinning the wheel
  • Bang! Bang! - a game similar to Pocket Tanks, but cannons are used
  • Risk - a game where the world is at stake
  • Missile Attack - a game where missiles are used to attack the enemy
  • Ski Free - a snow ski game traversing through rocks and trees
