The popular daytime kid’s television show, Sesame Street, will be doing something that they have never done before in their 43 seasons on network television: tackle divorce. Researchers, producers, and writers have been working for the past couple of years to have the show tackle the issue of divorce in a more direct manner. According to Lynn Chwatsky, the VP of Sesame Street’s outreach initiatives, they want children to understand that their parents divorcing are not their fault and that they are not alone.
The planned segment will feature Abby Cadaby, a pink fairy with parents who've been divorced for quite some time. Producers say that the segment will be at least 13 minutes long and will be part of a kit called, “Little Children, Big Challenges: Divorce.” It will also come with a storybook, an app, and a guide for parents.
The show initially tried to have a segment about divorce with Mr. Snuffleupagus back in 1992. However, the project was canned after it became apparent that it had an effect on pre-schoolers. The segment never made it on air, but producers are now confident that the newly planned project will have more positive results and can help young kids deal with divorce a whole lot better.
