Believe it or not, it is a given fact that some jobs are more damaging to your health than the rest. It may be due to the surrounding environment where you do your job, the nature of your work, or other reasons.
Here are some of the jobs out of the 27 jobs listed in Business Insider.
1. Dentists, dental surgeons, and dental assistants
Out of the 24 jobs listed, these ones make it to the top with a score of 65.4. Why is that so?
It is because dentists, dental surgeons, and dental assistants are exposed to the part of our body where most of the diseases come from. These professionals work with human teeth and gums and oral hygiene.
They examine, diagnose, and treat diseases, injuries, and malformations. Meaning to say, they are likely exposed to 84 contaminants and 75 possible diseases and infections.
2. Flight attendants and airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers
These professions rank 2nd and 12th on the list with an overall unhealthiest score of 62.3 and 55.7, respectively.
Flight attendants are those who provide personal services to ensure the flyers' safety, security, and comfort. They are in charge of greeting passengers, verifying tickets, explaining use of safety equipment, and making sure passengers have a hassle-free flight.
On the other hand, pilots, co-pilots, and flight engineers are in charge of the entire flight. Why are they unhealthy? One may ask.
These professions are healthy because they are exposed to radiation, multiple contaminants coming from all the passengers of the plane, and at least 77 possible diseases and infections.
3. Veterinarians and veterinary assistants and technicians
These people rank 4th on the list and have an overall unhealthiness score of 60.3. Why?
These professionals are exposed to 81 diseases and infections and 74 contaminants. Plus they have higher risks of getting rabies and other infections and diseases from animals.
They are responsible for diagnosing and treating animals, including performing medical tests when needed.
4. Water and wastewater treatment plant and system operators
Although they just rank 8th on the list, they are still considered one of the 10 unhealthiest jobs with a score of 58.2. These people operate or control systems and machines that are used in treating water. They can be exposed to hazardous conditions and infections that come from unsafe and untreated water.
5. Surgical and medical assistants, technologists, and technicians
With a score of 57.3, these professionals are assist in all kinds of medical operations. They usually spend most of their time in hospitals and laboratories where bacteria and viruses abound. They get in contact with patients who have different diseases and infections and can be exposed to other harmful chemicals.
