A tractor carrying debris from Sandy's aftermath directly collided into several cars on a primary highway in Long Island, New York last Wednesday afternoon, resulting in an immense pileup where one individual had been mortally wounded while at least 33 people were left injured. An elderly woman from Blue Point, whose identity is yet to be known, was found dead after her Toyota Camry crashed.
According to the authorities, the truck driver, identified as Raymond Simoneau, 42, from Rockingham, Vermont, was heading eastbound on the expressway when it slammed into several cars near the 68 exit in Shirley, around 70 miles east of NYC. He was reported to have no injuries.
The crash triggered a domino effect pile up with 35 automobiles smashing into another. At least three vehicles have caught fire and remained smoldering until the early evening, according to a local fire official.
The cause of the incident has yet to be determined, and no charges have been filed associated with it. Meanwhile, the tractor-trailer along with the other vehicles involved in the accident have already been impounded while an investigation to try to piece together the series of events leading to the said accident is currently ongoing.
