Massive furloughing and firing of government workers is expected to take place in the coming weeks unless Congress can reach a deal on deficit reduction. The across-the-board cuts, called sequestration, were mandated by the Budget Control Act of 2011.
One of the government agencies that would be greatly impacted include the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which runs airport security. Another is the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Decreased safety and security, as well as difficulties in travel and delays, are expected to follow.
Other agencies, including the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) would face furloughs of up to ten days, causing workloads to back up.
Thousands more are expected to be laid off at the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) as well as the National Park Service.
Health centers across the nation would also be impacted, with funding cuts and workers laid off.
A slew of other agencies face cuts as well, unless a deal can be made. The negative impact on the economy and the dramatic increase in unemployment make this an important deal for Congress and the President to complete before it is too late.
