Learning the art of marketing can be very useful in today's world, especially with the birth of social media. One's marketing skills are also helpful in promoting and positioning ourselves in such a way that we would land the job that we want.
In today's world it is a struggle to make yourself known if you don't build a strong web presence. Without it, there is a huge chance that you will miss a lot of opportunities.
So Dan Schawbel, a Gen Y career and workplace expert, Founder of Millennial Branding, and author of Promote Yourself: The New Rules For Career Success (St. Martin's Press), provided some tips to help you with marketing yourself.
1. Be the master of your field.
One of the ways to make yourself known is to build a name in a field that you are an expert of. For example, if you believe you are a good writer, then build a strong writing portfolio, gather a strong following or clients, and then make your way to the top. "When people know who you are and what value you bring to the table, it's easier to land a job or get clients."
2. Consistency is the key.
Be consistent in everything you do. For instance, if you want to build a name as a blogger, then build a blog and make sure you update in on a regular basis. If you want to be a food blogger, then you can make reviews of food or restaurants every week. This will help build your audience. "When it comes to developing a consistent brand image online, you should use the same picture and positioning across every social network profile that you're part of."
3. Follow industry experts.
Another must-do in terms of making a name for yourself online is to follow industry experts and get tips from them. You can either connect with them on LinkedIn, follow them on Instagram and Twitter, or add them on Facebook. You can also subscribe to their pages. Get the best tips from them, and if you get the chance to attend their conference or seminars, then do it. "It's never been easier to connect with industry experts, too. You can see them at conferences, email them and reply to their tweets."
These are just some of the tips in building your career online. If you have other tips you want to share, comment them here and let's exchange thoughts!
