"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 has been confirmed. The CW has also set renewed seasons for other series.
Deadline reported that the network has picked up all 11 of its current scripted series for next season. There are currently 10 shows on air while "Reign" is set to return.
DC's "Legends of Tomorrow" season 2, "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" season 2, "The Flash" season 3, "Arrow" season 5, "Supernatural" season 12, "iZombie" season 3, "Jane the Virgin" season 3, "The 100" season 4 and "Reign" season 4 have been confirmed for 2016-2017. "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 and "The Originals" season 4 will also be developed.
The publication noted that, although it has struggled with its viewership, "The Vampire Diaries" has experience significant improvement in its performance when it was moved to Fridays. "The Originals" has also been doing well in terms of ratings.
"The CW has become home to some of the most critically-acclaimed shows on broadcast television, with a wide array of fantastic scripted series across the week, ranging from musical comedy, to superhero action, to gritty sci-fi dramas," CW boss Mark Pedowitz said. "As we continue to further our strategy of more year-round original programming, picking up these 11 series for the 2016-2017 season puts us in a great position of having proven, high-quality shows to launch in the fall as well as midseason and summer of 2017."
There were speculations that "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 is doomed for cancellation. It was believed that this was caused by Nina Dobrev's exit from the show.
This is the first season without Dobrev, who portrays Elena Gilbert. Moreover, it is said that the series is experiencing a decline in viewership, with less than half the viewers it had when the actress was there.
According to AJC, "TVD" has been eclipsed by "The Flash," "Arrow," "Supernatural" and "iZombie." The show's ratings were at par with "Outlander" and "Below Deck."
