The "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 release date has been confirmed for this year. There are speculations that the highly-anticipated series will return by summer.
Ecumenical News reported that FUNimation president Gen Fukunaga confirmed the anime's upcoming return this year. No specific release date was given but fans believe that the next installment of the series will air this summer.
The publication noted that there are mixed expectations for the third season of the anime. Season 2 of the show was criticized for deviating from the plot of the manga. Some fans want the "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 release date to bring a story that follows the written series.
This will pose a problem for the show, though. According to MNR Daily, the anime's third season still doesn't have enough material from the manga to create a full installment.
The "Tokyo Ghoul:re" manga only had 43 chapters as of Oct. 2015 and only a few chapters were added after then. This would definitely be a problem for "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 since there are fewer storylines to be adapted.
There are speculations that some filler content will be added in the upcoming installment of the series. However, this will mean that season 3 will once again stray from the manga's plot.
The focus for "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 will reportedly be on Touka Kirishma. It is believed that she will act as Kaneki's partner as he recovers from amnesia.
HNGN noted that FUNimation president Gen Fukunaga hinted at the "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 release date for this year. This was when he announced a mobile game for the series.
"Ever since we began simulcasting the anime series last year, fans of 'Tokyo Ghoul' have been clamoring for a mobile game," he said. "With Season 2 now finished and Season 3 set for 2016, the anticipation for the game has only grown higher."
