Have you ever heard of the gig economy? A gig economy is a section where jobs are done by freelancers, part-timers, contractors and temps, as defined by NextAvenue.
The gig economy is becoming the biggest human capital trend this year. According to the Deloitte survey, 42% of U.S executives will be using "giggers" for the next three to five years.
Why is the "gig" big right now?
It has become the global marketplace for jobs. The fast changes in global advances and technology are causing businesses to rethink their structures. In order to succeed, companies employ the use of temps and contracts.
Giggers also offer flexibility. Forbes explained that there is a changing demographics of the workplace. Many Millennials want jobs that let them work when, and how much they wish, and many boomers hope to find more flexibility as they downshift into semi or early retirement. This section of the labor market has the skills needed by companies and employing them costs less. However, the competition is fierce.
If you're planning to become a gigger - remember these 4 steps in order to become a marketable freelancer.
1. Take advantage of workshops and trainings - The more updated and relevant your skills are, the more marketable and attractive you are as a freelancer. Try to attend workshops if they are being offered. Some companies even offer to send you off to school or events.
2. Maximize your teamwork & project management skills - The Deloitte survey showed that companies are looking at team-based orientation. Most likely, you will be with a group of other freelancers to work together in one project then disband to move on to the next. It is not always that a gigger will be working alone.
3. Monitor the job boards - Be on the move. Most online job boards specialize in freelance work. By looking at the lists, you'll get the feel of what skills you need to add and improve on.
4. Increase your networking activities - Most independent freelancers find their best assignments through networking. Make sure to connect even if you're only working for the day. You'll never know if you're ever needed again or will be referred to another project. Employers tend to hire people they already know or are known by people they know. At the same time, network with other giggers.
