A man visiting Antelope State Park in Utah was attacked by a 1500-pound bison this past Saturday, and has lived to tell about it.
Other visitors to the state park said that they saw the man, still unnamed, attempt to get the bison's attention while taking pictures. They reported that the man was throwing rocks and shaking a nearby fence that was standing in between him and the beast.
"The [bison] had gone through the gate section that's located real close to where he got hit and looked like he was going to run off the field," says Wayne Ebenroth of Boise, Idaho, He had to have done something to catch the [bison's] attention, because that's when he turned around and decided to pay him a visit."
Ebenroth, who snapped the photo taken above, noticed several people getting close to the animal and decided to get out his camera. The bison proceeded to pass through the gate section of the fence and approach the man. From there, the bison charged and pinned him against the fence.
"This person is very, very, very lucky that he wasn't killed," said assistant park manager John Sullivan.
Sullivan stated that bison are usually very good at giving off warning signals when they are about to attack. He noted that the fact that the man was already so close may have made it difficult to identify the impending attack.
"They'll huff, they'll lower their heads, they'll paw at the dirt," Sullivan explained. "Their tails usually go rigid and come up. Any one of those things is an indication that you're either too close or they're getting aggravated."
Sullivan went on to say that the man rather shocked and very embarrassed, but was otherwise doing fine after the attack. Park officials have already stated that they would not be issuing a citation to the man because, well, getting rammed by a 1500-pound bison seems like punishment enough. Judging by the photo, I think most would agree.
