Despite the success that Uber has experienced in other regions, its expansion in Mombasa is at risk. Even though it was successful in Nairobi, it's facing scrutiny in Mombasa.
According to a report from Standard Digital News, "The launch into Kenya's second biggest city comes barely two weeks after the firm advertised for the position of a Mombasa-based operations coordinator and the San-Francisco-based firm will be hoping to ride on its success in Nairobi where the launch of the service in January caused jitters from traditional taxi operators."
However, the traditional drivers are not at all happy with the recent business ordeal. Nevertheless, the people and consumers have voiced out their support for Uber owing to its exemplary services and transparency.
Uber Kenya Operations Manager Kagure Wamuyu said, "Mombasa is a cultural and economic hub as well as a popular tourist destination that has a need for safe, reliable and efficient transportation and we are so excited to be launching here."
In a different note, even though Uber has been accepted gladly by most people, it's presence it's causing tensions and building a rift in the society. To prove the latter, a past report from Voa cited, "Tensions between Kenyan taxi companies and Uber have risen over the past month, as cab drivers say Uber's ride-hailing app and lower fares hamper their ability to earn a living."
The tension escalated and even reached a point of burning an Uber taxi to the ground, according to the same report. In addition, it remains to be seen how the launching of Uber Taxi in Mombasa would fare and would it get the same fate as it did in Nairobi.
