Eighteen year old Devin Washington was on his way to an interview at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. He'd never thought his day would get him the job in an unexpected heroic fashion.
During the interview on 8700 Chef Menteur Highway, the high school football player was sitting down at about 1:00 PM with the manager, Danyanna Metoyer, when a man grabbed money from the register. In an attempt to stop him, the assistant manager, Dominique Griffin, grabbed the robber's arm. The two struggled but the robber, who was later identified as Pablo Ciscart, was able to pull away. He was trying to escape but Metoyer was nearby and blocked the door. Ciscart attempted to push Metoyer out of the exit but Washington stood up and grabbed the suspect from behind in a reverse bear hug. His strength, most likely from football which is a contact sport, held the robber in place.
Ciscart, unable to get away, eventually surrendered. Officers were already en route to the scene, WDSU reports. Dispatch has advised them that the subject is already being held down by the job applicant.
The police said that Ciscart confessed to the crime and he also had a record for a similar crime from St. Bernard Parish. He is now locked up and charged with simple robbery and fugitive attachment. Nola has it that the register had about $300 - $400.
When asked about the incident, Washington said, "He was trying to put up a fight with me, and I was just holding him there," The Root reports. "I wasn't scared or nervous or anything like that. I just got up and did it." He was not sure if the man had a weapon but he wasn't scared to pin him.
Needless to say, Washington walked out of the restaurant with a brand-new job.
