Shifting Career Paths After The Recession, How You’re On The Right Track In Las Vegas

Employees who are unhappy working in certain industries are now thinking "It's time for a change."

Employees who are unhappy with their current professions are seeking a different line of work and the Review Journal indicated that the American job satisfaction rate has ranged between about 42.6% and 48.3% annually from 2008-2014.

Career Coach PJ Sheldon explains that people who are looking into changing careers isn't looking for another job without some intense introspection. Sheldon, who is the author of "You're Hired!" and "Career Strategies for Success" explains that these group of people have the mindset that they may need to spend money and time to learn new skills. They will look to their past and find out what they loved to do and map out their future. Sheldon said that once job-seekers gain employment in their new professions, they need to be prepared to stay put for at least a year. Sheldon goes on to add that it's hard at first but it gets better.

What about those who think they do not have the time? According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, time spent in unemployment increases with age. The January 2016 data showed that the average duration of unemployment climbs from 19.7 weeks for ages 20 to 24 to 37.4 weeks for those 65 or older. However, as Sheldon explains it, "Regaining employment is up to the job-seeker" and that "Age is only a number." Older job-seekers should learn the latest trends in order to get back in the game. They are riding the tide against millenials who are going against what they decided to major in college. "With millennials, it's a specific type of company culture they're looking for. They want significant community impact. They want to work with companies that care about the communities where they live - not only nonprofits. Millennials are attracted to employers that give back to the community."

If you're in the Las Vegas area, Sheldon suggests looking into AARP Nevada, Workforce Connections' One Stop Career Center and Nevada JobConnect for employment assistance.
