Early Monday morning, a six-alarm fire at a Dallas condominium complex at 12363 Abrams Road entrapped a veteran firefighter, Stanley Wilson.
The 28-year veteran braved into the three-story building among 100 firefighters at approximately 3 a.m. Monday at the Hearthwood North Condominiums in Dallas Texas. Billowing smoke was seen at the roof of the complex when they arrived.
Initially, the firefighters were attacking the fire offensively, but later changed to a more defensive position when the fire became less controllable.
Though the cause for the fire is unknown, the blaze quickly spread through the third floor. During his combat with the fires, at approximately 5 a.m., Wilson radioed in saying that he was trapped in the building and asked for rescuers to help him out. Rescuers, however, was unable to locate where he was, and arrive hours later only to recover his body.
Wilson was a second driver and engineer for East Dallas's station 53. Mayor of Dallas, Mike Rawlings addressed his heroic act, "Fireman Wilson’s professionalism was exemplary. His sacrifice was complete. He was a hero, as I told his boys, they should be very proud."
Matt Bosch who served as a fellow troop leader for Wilson's son, told CBS Dallas, "We're really going to miss Stan. He's been a rock. He's been one of the school leaders in our Boy Scout troop. Not only did the boys look up to him as a guide and leader, but to some of the dads."
When Wilson was carried out on a stretcher onto an ambulance, firefighters saluted the hero and removed their helmets.
Five residents in the condominium, including an boy 8-years-old, was saved from the fire. Two other firefighters suffered minor injuries.
