A 23-year-old Czech woman completed an impossible feat. She was able to conceive quintuplets without the use of In-Vitro Fertilization, IVF.
Alexandra Kinova, a now mother-of-six, discovered that she was pregnant with quins in April when a fifth head was seen in an ultrasound. She is due to deliver by Caesarean section on Sunday.
At first, the woman from Milovice, 30km east of Prague, was told that she was only pregnant with twins. In March, the doctors realized that she was pregnant with at least 4 children. In April, the fifth head was finally seen, covered by the other babies.
The probabilities for conceiving quintuplets naturally is, according to specialists, one in several million.
Only 3 out of the 5 babies' sex is known. Two boys and a girl plus two siblings with unknown gender.
The doctors have injected drugs to ensure the development of lungs for the babies—a normal complication when children are born as quintuplets—so that they would have higher chances of survival when they are born.
Dr Alena Měchurová, the head of the hospital, is hoping that family will be okay, however, she cannot make any guarantees.
The hospital is planning double their staff for the C-Section for the first set of natural quintuplets in Czech on Sunday.
