Shermain Miles, a homeless woman, has perhaps broken a world record with the amount of times she has been arrested. However, based on a recent case of a homeless man committing crime just to get arrested and have a bed in jail, this could be one profound reason why the justice system cannot curb Shermain Mile's addiction to crime.
The Cook County judge Peggy Chiampas, however, based her continuous terrorism to the streets on the fact that she is "acutely psychotic" with an abusive childhood and in need of psychological help for her to be rid of the alcohol addiction that's been plaguing her for years, causing her to be arrested 396 times.
Since 1978, the Chicago resident was arrested 396 times under a minimum of 83 different aliases. The 396 arrests included 92 thefts, 65 disorderly conduct cases, 59 prostitution-related crimes, and 5 due to robbery. Miles' plea deal sentenced her to a mental health and substance abuse treatment program to try to curb her desire for crime.
The 396 times arrested Shermain Miles would have been back on the street in 3 months if this plea deal had not been made however. The program would mean that she would be in rehab for at least one year. If she still goes back to arrests after that, it might very well mean that she is looking for permanent housing in the safety of prison walls.
The case was being overseen by the Chairman of the Prison Review Board for the State of Illinois, Adam Monreal. This important case details 4 of her 396 arrests.
At times, difficult situations call for dire solutions. Hopefully this is not another case of the homeless having to commit crime to provide for herself.
