The city of Chicago experienced a horrific weekend of gun shootings throughout the area.
The shootings have not ceased. On Monday, Chicago police shot and killed Michael Westley, 15. In a mere three days, at least 7 people were killed and at least 46 people were shot. Chicago police were involved in three of those shootings. Westley was shot because police say he pointed at gun at a group of officers. They claim that they heard shots fires and saw three people running from the area, including Westley. When police attempted to arrest him, Westley pointed at a gun at them, leaving the police no choice but to fire at him. Westley was killed.
Another police-involved shooting occurred in the North Lawndale area. Police were attempting to stop a vehicle for a traffic violating when a man came out of the car with a firearm in his waistband and ran to escape. The man slipped and fell while the officers chased after him. Police say the man reached for his weapon while trying to get back up, and an officer fired at him, fatally wounding him. The man was 21-year-old Antowyn Johnson.
The number of deaths and critical injuries that have been reported over a three-day span are alarming. However, Chicago police consider these numbers a substantial improvement and view it in a positive light. They say that murder and shooting rates are significantly lower than those at the same time last year. Chicago Police Department spokesman Adam Collins noted that eight more people were shot on the same weekend last year, and that overall crime in the city of Chicago has decreased by 14%, the lowest since 1963.
Nevertheless, police acknowledge that there is more work to be done and are trying to rally up public morale in order to promote further safety for the city of Chicago.
