Former Olympic Gold medalist diver Greg Louganis announced Monday that he was engaged to his partner, paralegal Johnny Chaillot in the fall.
Louganis, 53, was most recently featured on the celebrity diving competition show, "Splash." Louganis was asked to comment on his engagement. "This is what the universe had in store for both of us," he told People Magazine. Chaillot, 52, currently works in the Trust and Estates Litigation Department of the renowned Los Angeles-based law firm Loeb & Loeb.
During his professional diving career, Louganis garnered five Olympic medals. He also won five world championships and almost 50 national titles. Louganis is disputably the greatest diver in history, being the only male to sweep the 3m and 10m diving events in consecutive Olympic games ('84 and '88).
In 1995, Louganis came out as gay and HIV positive on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." He recently told Logo Online's the Backlot that though he had been with Chaillot for a year, he had no interest in having children. He said, "I don't want to be an older parent. Even though my life is pretty active I know what it was like to have an older father. I'll be the fun uncle. I think that's good enough for me."
Louganis currently serves as mentor for the U.S. Olympic diving team, a judge for the Red Bull Cliff Diving Tour, a dog agility competitor, and a motivational speaker. He was also the subject of a feature-length documentary film, Back on Board. Besides his engagement, it was also reported on Monday that Louganis was in the first class of inductees to the Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held on August 2 in Chicago.
