At least 15 people have been killed and more than 20 injured in a suicide bombing at a seminary and mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan, policed said Friday morning.
The bomb was detonated while people were praying at the mosque. Superintendent of Police Rural Shafiullah Khan said, "One of the attackers wearing a suicide vest entered the mosque and blew himself up in front of the worshippers." Khan said three attackers tried to enter the mosque, but two were prevented from entering by guards of the mosque. The third managed to get in; guards shot at the man before he detonated his vest.
The militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi is suspected to be responsible for the attack. The group has carried out many attacks against Shiites in Pakistan in recent years.
Eyewitness Khadim Hussain said he was inside the mosque when he heard gunshots followed by a loud explosion that shattered the windows and front canopy of the mosque. Another individuals at the mosque said that the attacker shot at the guards posted at the entrance of the complex before entering the building where the explosives were detonated. After the first attacker detonated his bomb, the two other militants escaped, and police have launched a search operation to find them. According to Khan, 15 people were killed and many more wounded.
Zawar Hussain, who was inside the mosque when the militants attacked, said their firing created an uproar among the nearly 300 worshippers inside. "After the blast, I feel down," Hussain said. "I saw bodies and badly injured worshippers everywhere." Video footage has been captured, showing "blood spattered on the floor and walls of the mosque. Broken glass littered the floor, and there were holes in the walls and celing caused by ball bearings packed in with the bomber's explosives to cause maximum damage and casualties."
