Woman Killed on Walk of Fame, Stabbed by Homeless Men Over $1; Mother of Attacker Says He's Mentally Ill, Was Only ‘A Matter of When This Would Happen, To Be Honest’ [VIDEO & REPORT]

Three homeless men were arrested Wednesday for fatally stabbing a young woman who was taking photographs on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Police say the 23-year-old woman was found bleeding from multiple stab wounds near the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue at about 8:30 P.M. Tuesday. Officials say the woman and her friend were taking cell phone pictures in the crowded area where the three suspects were holding signs and asking for money.

"The girl was just laying on the ground with blood everywhere," said Monta Cobbin, an employee of the American Eagle store near the Walk of Fame. "Everyone was trying to help her stop the blood."

The victim, Christine Calderon, was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and died during surgery. Homicide detectives say Calderon was walking down Hollywood Boulevard with a male friend when she stopped to take a picture of a cardboard sign one of the three men was holding. She had been amused by the rude words and smiley face on the sign.

The men demanded that Calderon pay $1 for the picture, but she refused, causing an argument between the two parties. According to the Los Angeles Times, one of the men jumped on Calderon, pushing her to the ground, while her friend was pinned against a wall. The men proceeded to stab Calderon multiple times. Calderon was bleeding as she ran away. Eyewitnesses identified the suspects at the scene at around midnight using photographs Calderon and her friend took.

The mother of one of the suspects, Dustin James Kinnear, says her son is severely mentally ill. "It's been a matter of when this would happen, to be honest with you. I just couldn't get him the help he needed," she said of her 26-year-old son.

The two other men have been identified as Jason Joel Wolstone, 33, and Brian Joseph Widdows, 34. Kinnear has been charged with murder, while Wolstone was charged with assault by means likely to produce bodily injury and two counts of accessory after the fact. Widdows was charged with two counts of accessory after the fact. All three men have prior records.
