The Green Bay Packers is planning to retire the ex-quarterback Brett Favre's jersey before the 2016 season.
Brett Favre was once-upon-a-time an awesome Packers quarterback, deserved to be enshrined in Canton's Hall of Fame. However, after what Brett Favre has done, many Packers fans might be in confusion to the CEO's latest announcement.
"I am often asked questions about Brett Favre, and specifically whether we will retire his number. We do want to bring Brett back into the fold, and plan on retiring his number. He deserves to have his number retired for what he accomplished, and meant to the Packers, during his time here. I thought Aaron Rodgers and [Brett Favre] jointly presenting the Comeback Player of the Year Award at the NFL Honors program was a great first step.
"It is really just a question of timing in terms of retiring his jersey. The timing has to be right for both Brett and the organization. Brett will lbe a first ballot Hall of Famer in 2016, and we would like to retire his number prior to his induction," said Mark Murphy, Packers CEO.
Brett Favre and the Packers had previously a ugly (almost disgusting) divorce. He retired as a member of the Vikings. As CBS Sports notes, it was the closest thing to Judas in the world of the NFL. Favre had also worked with the Jets, but that also didn't go so well.
Murphy claimed that even though many of the fans were upset that Brett betrayed and played for the Vikings, the CEO has placed his focus on the "great things he did for the team during his 16 years [at Green Bay Packers]." He alluded to Greg Jennings and Desmond Bishop's betrayals as well, as they played for rival teams as they continued their careers. Essentially, the CEO is saying that the Judas-betrayal was getting towards the norm for the sport and that it should be excused for Brett Favre.
Favre however, was much more valuable to Packers fans than Jennings, who also departed and joined Minnesota. Even so, the No. 4 Jersey of Brett Favre is in its stages to be immortalized.
