Diet sodas health risks have always been the trend of studies. But this new study looks like it might put away diet sodas (and other sweetener uses) forever.
Purdue University has released their study that encompasses data from the past 5 years. The research looked upon studies to find intersecting patterns between sugar eaters and sweetener consumers.
"We've gotten to a place where it is normal to drink diet soda because people have the false impression that it is healthier than indulging in a regular soda," says Susan Swithers, the author of the report and a behavioral neuroscientist. "But research is now very clear that we need to also be mindful of how much fake sugar they are consuming."
She adds, that diet soda is actually having "a counterintuitive effect" because the consumers are not watching the amount they are consuming.
The report shows that diet soda generally utilizes sugar substitutes like Sweet 'N Low or Equal, which have the negative effects. The report claims that those who regularly partake of these sweeteners might be just like those who frequently consume sugar, with increased metabolic risk, such as Type II Diabetes and Heart Disease.
According to the report, diet sodas and artificial sweeteners tastes sweet to the body, which is sending out a hormonal response for increased sugar intake, but instead did not contain the sugar that the body was awaiting. Time after time, if the response was not met, the body will start to stop responding to the sweet sensation in the tongue, so that when the user truly intakes sugar, the body would not be prepared to respond, counter acting the user's wish to slim down.
Additionally, due to the body being prepared to consume sugar by the drink, it may trick the person into eating more sugary foods to "balance" the body back to the homeostasis.
