In the annual San Fermin Festival in Pamplona, Spain, a woman runner was gored by a frantic bull and is in "very grave" condition. She is now recovering from the serious injuries after a bull's horn pierced her back and punctured the right lung, suffering multiple rib fractures.
During the last day of the festival, a young Australian lady, 23, identified as J. E., was attacked in the "Running of the Bulls" Sunday by a Miura bull just outside of the ring's entrance. She was clinging to the wooden barrier as she was being marred.
The New South Wales woman is now the fifth-ever woman to be gored in Spain's Bull Run since the 1974 lift of the ban on female runners. J. E. immediately underwent emergency surgery after the brutal goring, and officials declared that her condition is very grave.
Miura bulls are highly renowned and celebrated in Spain for their size, agility, stamina, and poise. These bulls were used as the name of one of Ferrucio Lamborghini's legendary sports cars. It only took the bulls 2 minutes and 16 seconds to run 850 meters from their stable to the arena on Sunday.
It is very rare that females are gored in the annual bull runs since most of the runners are men. There were other incidents involving four people, suffering only minor injuries on the final day of the festival. Conversely on Saturday, there was a 23-person pile up that sent five people to the hospital.
Not only are women like J. E. likely to be gored by the bulls, but they are also more likely to be sexually assaulted by the men. Spanish government officials reported that women participants in the festival were intoxicated with wine and groped by men as they were stripped of their clothes in public.
Local government equality officer Fatima Frutos said, "It is not just about the amount of booze drunk, but local men and tourists think they can take advantage of the crowds to overstep the mark with women, and get away with it."
The incidents of sexual assault can ruin the reputation for "festive good fun," and as a result, "Women tourists will stop coming."
