A Latrobe standoff between the police and a suspect of an armed robbery at a local pharmacy lasted 18 hours overnight, leaving the suspect dead while a SWAT officer's head received minor injuries due to gunfire.
Scott Murphy had barricade himself in his house after he had allegedly robbed a pharmacy of prescription drugs. The police had tracked his vehicle to arrest him at his home.
"Upon entry Mr. Murphy shot one of the members of our emergency response team. After our member was shot, several members of our emergency response team returned shots," said a member of State Police Troop 8, Stephen Emberly.
A trooper named Brian King was grazed above his eye by the bullet that had shattered his shield.
The house located in Latrobe, 40 miles east of Pittsburgh, had contained a large amount of ammunition and weapons. The weapon collection included "several handguns and long rifles," according to family members.
Negotiators attempted to enter the house to stop bloodshed in the Latrobe standoff, but the event ended with Scott Murphy's death as he continually fired against the police and the SERT team during the stalemate.
The Special Emergency Response Team fired tear gas several times during the Latrobe standoff and wind brought the thick cloud through the community and affected passer-bys.
Murphy's wife had died two years ago when she was 42-years-old.
