‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Sequel In The Works; Filming To Begin In Australia, To Explore Imperator Furiosa’s Backstory?

A "Mad Max: Fury Road" sequel is reportedly in the works, bringing back its lead stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. According to reports, the sequel, titled "Mad Max: The Wasteland," will begin its filming in Australia.

The "Mad Max: Fury Road" sequel is allegedly going to focus on the backstory of Theron's character, Imperator Furiosa. According to The Guardian, the production will take place in Australia's Broken Hill area and filming could start as early as later this year.

Although there's been no confirmation from director George Miller and Warner Bros. as to the plot and the cast, there's a good chance that Theron would return for the prequel. The Oscar-winning actress previously expressed her desire to work on the movie again as Furiosa.

In an interview with MTV, Theron revealed that she is definitely game to do a "Mad Max: Fury Road" sequel.

"I would love to bring her back to life! Are you kidding?" Theron told MTV. "I can see how people are kind of responding to her. I look at my little girl and I'm like, 'yeah, I'd love to play this woman again.'"

If the next movie is really going to be a prequel, viewers will finally learn how Furiosa got her mechanical limb.

As for Tom Hardy, he previously said in an interview that he's been contracted to appear in three more "Mad Max" films after "Fury Road." His character, Max Rockastansky only met Furiosa at the time "Fury Road" took place. If "Mad Max: The Wasteland" is going to be about Furiosa's backstory, it's uncertain how Hardy's character can take part.

"Mad Max: Fury Road" was one of the biggest surprise of 2015. The remake of the 1970's dystopian action film scored well at the box office, taking home $378 million worldwide.

It also received massive Oscar buzz, having been nominated in ten categories at the 88th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film won many of the technical awards, including Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.
