Song Hye Kyo Dominates China Poll; Overshadows Hallyu Ban

From being Seoul's favorite soul, "Descendants of the Sun" actress Song Hye Kyo was named the Goddess of Asia 2016 after receiving almost 3.6 million votes from netizens all around the globe. In the online pageant orchestrated by China's Asian Goddess Entertainment Network, Hye Kyo prevailed over fellow Korean nominees such as Song Ji Hyo from "Running Man," Im Yoona from SNSD, and popular Chinese celebrities Zhao Li Ying and Zheng Shuang.

According to Morning Ledger, the 34-year-old actress captured the hearts of many voters even in the preliminary period of the coveted competition. This award doesn't only validate Hye Kyo's seemingly ageless beauty but also her popularity in China, despite the current Hallyu ban in this country.

In response to the recent formation of the United States Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (US THAAD) in South Korea, China banned Korean celebrities, producers, and investors to penetrate their market. Viewed as a threat to national security, China expressed its strong opposition towards US THAAD camp in South Korea; however, this didn't hinder Chinese Hallyu fans in rooting for the South Korean beauty.

Hye Kyo mesmerized many hearts with her playful portrayal of a struggling writer Han Ji-Eun in the well-loved drama "Full House," whose life got intertwined with the character of Lee Young-Jae played by singer Rain.

But after years of being in the industry, Hye Kyo has once again proven her intense acting capabilities with her character as Dr. Kang Mo Yeon in another hit military romance drama, "DOTS." Also starring heartthrob actor Song Joong Ki as Captain Yoo Si Jin, these two were even rumored to be dating when fans reportedly saw them roaming New York together.

With the global success of their drama, a "DOTS" sequel is highly anticipated by fans. And because of their undeniable chemistry on and off screen, Hye Kyo and Joong Ki are expected to be reunited next year in the premiere of the latter's new movie "Battleship Island."
