Unfortunately in Super Smash Bros news, we receive word that there will not be a story mode in the highly anticipated fighting game Super Smash Bros. 4, which is set to come out for the Wii U and 3DS systems in 2014. Perhaps to compensate for such sad news, we will be given partially customizable characters.
So what's the reason for no story mode? The short answer is given by the International Digital Times: "Because Masahiro Sakurai doesn't like spoilers, basically."
And the long answer? Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of the game, lamented in his column of Weekly Famitsu about how the hard work that was done to complete the cutscenes of Subspace Emissary, the lengthy and fun single-player campaign of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, would ultimately end up on YouTube.
Alright, if we really think about it, is there anything wrong about uploading Super Smash Bros. cutscenes to YouTube? Apolon of the International Digital Times said that cutscenes going on the Internet "is neither new or bad -- if anything it's an act of fondness and affection, and chances are people won't watch them unless they've already seen them, and want to do so again."
However, the "act of fondness and affection" is simply not good enough for Sakurai. "Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the Internet," said Sakurai. "You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees (a cutscene). I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I've decided against having them."
Ok, there must be something that Sakurai and his team are doing instead of making the story mode. Frank Lucci of the Latinos Post reports that Sakurai and his team are working to create videos for new characters like Mega Man, The Animal Crossing Villager, and the Wii Fit Trainer. He and his team hope to make videos that show off their moves and personality. Also, the 3DS version will have a mode that is different than the traditional versus mode, but nothing more has been said about this.
Best of all, Sakurai shed more light upon previously previewed features for the game, such as the different stages for the Wii U and 3DS versions and the option of character customization. The Wii U version will have console based stages and the 3DS will have handheld-based stages. For example, the Legend of Zelda stages will be based upon the Spirit Tracks for the 3DS and Skyward Sword for the Wii U. Concerning character customization, players will alter character performance as they alter the characters themselves. Currently, the team for Super Smash Bros. is working on a feature that will allow players to transfer customizable 3DS characters to the Wii U version.
So, even though there's the disappointment of no single-player story mode, there will be more additions that perhaps will compensate and enhance the gaming experience.
