'Harry Potter' Actor Rupert Grint Will Make Stage Debut as a Thug in 'Mojo' Revival

Rupert Grint, best known for playing awkward wizard Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, will make his stage debut in London as a criminal in Jez Butterworth's play Mojo. The L.A. Times reported July 26 that producers announced the same day that Grint will join the cast of Jez Butterworth's, Mojo.

"I'd seen the Potter films with my daughter and always thought Rupert was truthful as Ron Weasley," director Ian Rickson said of Grint. "There's something ordinary and centered about him, and in this world of Mojo you want that grittiness."

The drama set to open at London's West End later this year, takes place in a 1950's sketchy nightclub after the owner is viciously murdered. Grint will play Sweets, a thug with an amphetamine addiction.

The L.A. Times also reported that Ian Rickson, who was responsible for the Mojo original 1995 production at the Royal Court Theatre, will direct this time around.

According to The Daily Mail, Mojo will run at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London beginning October 26.

"A whole lot of people who might not see Mojo will come and see it," Rickson said of his concern about the audience Grint's appearance will draw.

Daniel Mays and Downton Abbey's Brendan Coyle will also star in the black comedy set in a seedy 1950s Soho night club.

"After playing the same character for 11 years, it's nice to do something completely different." Grint said, then promoting the film The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman . "The character was someone who's completely the opposite of Ron."
