Henry Luce founded the magazine in 1883 as a general interest and humor magazine. He then acquired the business as his own in 1936 so he can create LIFE, a weekly magazine that centers on photojournalism.
In launching the magazine as a weekly publication, Luce declared the magazine's mission statement: "To see life; to see the world; to eyewitness great events; to watch the faces of the poor and the gestures of the proud; to see strange things-machines, armies, multitudes, shadows in the jungle and on the moon; to see man's work-his paintings, towers and discoveries; to see things thousands of miles away, things hidden behind walls and within rooms, things dangerous to come to; the women that men love and many children; to see and to take pleasure in seeing; to see and be amazed; to see and be instructed"
In short, the photos of LIFE magazine by themselves tell stories even without added elaboration from written words or texts.
The Magazine ceased its weekly publication schedule and became intermittent until 1978. It became a monthly magazine from 1978 -2002.
After its monthly publication stopped, LIFE continued to be published in commemorative or special publications. From 2004 TO 2007 LIFE continued as a supplement to a weekly newspaper and gradually evolved into a website LIFE.com, now a photo channel of Time.com.
Today in the world of the web and internet communications, TIME is still a by-word when it comes to iconic pictures. Time.com in URL: https://time.com/4537185/life-shop-gallery/ shows 10 famous pictures by LIFE magazine that amazed the world.
