Philippines-America Relationship Update And News: President Rodrigo Duterte Cancels Alliance With America, Turns To China

Four months after the Philippines elected President Rodrigo Duterte after the Liberal Party President Benigno Aquino, a lot of issues have risen including the cancellation of all ties between the Philippines and the United States, replacing it by forging partnerships with Russia, and long-term enemy, China--according to The Economist.

Majority of the Filipinos have voted for the Dirty Harry for a hope that drug addiction and drug reselling in the Philippines will come to an end. However, after cases on extra judicial killings and uncontrollable police agencies, it seems like half of the Philippines is already regretting what they have done.

After the United Nations tribunal agreed in favor of the Philippines on the territorial claims, President Duterte continued forging alliance with China, further withdrawing all ties with the United States.

At present, with the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Convention happening on November 7 to 18, 2016 at Marrakech, Morocco, the Philippines has decided not to send representatives because of the President's disagreement on the necessity of the Paris Agreement. This is also a sign of protest against the United Nations after their tribunal decided to put the ownership of the West Philippine Sea or the South China Sea solely to the Philippines, leaving China's claims voided and null.

Also, after the devastation of Typhoon Haima, President Duterte stood firm with his decision of breaking ties with the United States by discouraging the government not to receive any help from the western group.

Now, President Rodrigo Duterte has been questioned with his stances on the Paris Agreement, on the way he treats the foreign aid that was being offered to the Filipinos, and the way he reacts on the tensions between the drug dealers and the police where a lot have shed blood despite ignorance.
