Pilot Amelia Rose Earhart, also traffic reporter at 9NEWS in Colorado, is going to attempt to complete her flight next summer in a Pilatus PC-12 NG single-engine aircraft. She has announced plans to retrace the final flight of her famous namesake.
Earhart will co-pilot a plane leaving from Oakland, California along with Patrick Carter, 29, and circumnavigate the Earth. According to USA Today on July 31, 2013, the two will fly more than 100 hours and make 14 stops on their journey to closely mimic the original path.
"They'll make the trek in a state-of-the-art, $4.6-million, 2014 model PC-12 NG provided by Pilatus Business Aircraft of Broomfield, Colo., one of two principal sponsors."
Amelia Earhart who attempted to be the first woman to fly solo around the world before her tragic disappearance in 1937 inspired her distant relative who also obtained pilot's license in 2004. She then accomplished a transcontinental flight from Oakland, Ca to Miami, Fl in 2012, repeating a similar path taken by Amelia Earhart in 1937 on her second try to circle the globe.
"My passion for flight and adventure has driven me to explore new experiences I never would have imagined possible as a child," said Amelia. "Hard work, persistence and great role models have enabled me to fly outside the lines and achieve my dreams. Aviation plays an integral role in my life and I hope to share some of that joy with others through this adventure."
She has dreamt of this flight since she was 18 years old. Amelia is the founder and president of the Fly With Amelia Foundation, a Colorado-based non-profit which aims to get more girls, aged 16-18, involved with aviation, providing flight scholarships to young women; flight-based educational curriculum; and a variety of opportunities for people to get involved in aviation. As a member of The Ninety-Nines, an international organization of women pilots, she works with more than 75 charities each year. She is devoted to advancing opportunities through flight to people of all ages and backgrounds.
"By recreating and symbolically completing Amelia Earhart's flight around the world, I hope to develop an even deeper connection to my namesake and also encourage the world to pursue their own adventures. Amelia believed that, 'adventure is worthwhile in itself' and it is that type of attitude that spurs us to seek the unknown, push our limits and fly outside the lines."
